On March 6, the Director of the Transportation Energy Center, Bob Carling, spoke on opportunities and challenges in transportation energy at the Satellite Kick-off Symposium for I2CNER: The International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research. Held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the event lasted two days and featured speakers from national laboratories, academia, industry, the NSF, and the DOE.
Director Carling also moderated a panel at the Industry-National Laboratory Workshop on Modeling and Simulation from March 7-8, held in Austin, TX. The panel, entitled “Accelerating Vehicle Calibration through Modeling and Simulation," featured three panelists: Tariq Samad of Honeywell International Inc., Fred Streitz of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Sam Winegarden of GM. This meeting was the second in a three-part series; senior manager Andy McIlroy attended the first part last month.
On March 26-28, CRF manager Damian Rouson and senior technical staff member Karla Morris taught an intensive workshop on object-oriented programming (OOP) in Fortran 2003 at the University of California at Berkeley. OOP aims to increase a program’s maintainability in part by reducing cross-module data dependencies and to increase a program’s reusability in part by providing for extensible derived types. Emerging compiler support for Fortran 2003 inspires a more modern program design and implementation style. The class will be repeated at the Berkeley Lab Oakland Scientific Facility from April 10-12.
Sandia/California vice president Rick Stulen hosted a visit from field representatives John Murray and Jessica Hartzell of CA Senator Dianne Feinstein’s office on March 29. The visit included a tour of the CRF and discussion on how to accelerate innovation for secure and sustainable transportation.
