During a year-long stay at the CRF working under David Chandler, postdoctoral appointee Lori Culberson built a new high-resolution velocity-mapped ion imaging apparatus for studying two important combustion processes: low-energy collisions and the photodissociation process. Lori also performed initial diatomic-molecule photodissociation experiments to calibrate the apparatus. Use of the apparatus will build understanding of how molecules exchange energy upon collision and test theoreticians’ ability to calculate these combustion processes.
