Sandia was a recipient of the prestigious R&D100 award for work on the Sandia Cooler, a technology developed by Jeff Koplow at the CRF. The Cooler, which was featured in an earlier CRF story, can significantly reduce the energy needed to cool processor chips in data centers and large-scale computing environments, and offers benefits in other applications where thermal management and energy efficiency are important, particularly heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC).

R&D Magazine presents the award each year to researchers who, according to the magazine’s editors as well as independent judging panels, have developed the year’s 100 most outstanding advances in applied technologies.

Koplow also recently presented a poster on his work at the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) 2012 Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) Symposium: Discovery and Innovation for National Security.
