Biography
Dr. Aleš Srna is the principal investigator in the Sandia Heavy-Duty Optical Engine Laboratory and leads a team of researchers responsible for heavy-duty diesel and gaseous fuels heavy-duty engine combustion research at Sandia National Laboratories. He is using optical and laser-based diagnostic techniques to build understanding of the processes governing efficiency and emissions formation. In this role, he works in close collaboration with US industry to address key knowledge barriers impeding the development of efficient and reliable heavy-duty powertrains. Currently, Aleš focuses on developing understanding of hydrogen and natural-gas engine combustion processes.
Education & Experience
Aleš received BSc in Physics from University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 2011, and MSc in Mechanical engineering from ETH Zurich, Switzerland, in 2014, followed by a PhD in mechanical engineering from ETH Zurich in 2018 for his work on natural gas-diesel dual-fuel combustion research. He continued his career as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of New South Wales (Prof. Kook and Prof. Hawkes), working on gasoline and hydrogen combustion in compression-ignition engines. Since 2020, Aleš leads the Sandia National Laboratories’ Heavy-Duty Diesel and Gaseous Fuels Optical Engine Laboratory.
