Biography

Ashfia Huq is a manager in the Materials Physics Department, which is part of the Chemistry Combustion and Materials Science Center in the 8300 Division at Sandia National Laboratories. Prior to joining Sandia, Ashfia worked at Apple Inc. as a manager and X-ray/Neutron subject matter expert in the battery org.  Before that she worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratories in various roles at the Neutron Scattering Directorate.

Education

  • Ph.D., Physics, Stony Brook University, NY, (2003)
  • AB, Physics & Computer Science, Mount Holyoke College, MA (1996)

Research Interests

My primary research interest is studying structure property relationship of materials using X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. Topics include energy storage materials and materials for correlated electron systems. I also have extensive experience in instrumentation and was involved in and led the team that built the powder diffractometer POWGEN at ORNL’s Spallation Neutron Source.

Professional Organizations & Leadership

  • Member of the Editorial Board of Physical Review M (2017-present)
  • Member of Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee (2023-2025)
  • Served as a member of US National Committee for Crystallography (2017-2022)
  • Served as member of International Union of Crystallography committee for powder diffraction (2018-2021)

Awards

  • Mary Lyon Award (2008): Awarded by the Alumnae Association of Mount Holyoke College. The award, named after the college’s 1837 founder, Mary Lyon, is presented to an outstanding young alumna who has been out of college 15 years or less
  • Barrett Award (2023): The biennial award is made in the name of Charles S. Barrett to recognize outstanding contributions to the field of powder diffraction
