Biography
Ethan S. Hecht is a Senior Member of the Technical Staff at the Combustion Research Facility at Sandia National Laboratories. He has broad expertise in hydrogen energy systems. He has led experimental investigations of (high pressure and cryogenic) hydrogen dispersion and flame behavior using laser and conventional diagnostics, helped develop the HyRAM quantitative risk assessment toolkit, contributed to reference station designs of hydrogen fueling stations, and performed experiments on the synthesis and characterization of metal hydrides for solid-state hydrogen storage. Beyond hydrogen, he has also worked on a range of projects at Sandia, including developing the scientific underpinnings for CO2-neutral coal utilization strategies, identifying promising approaches to improving efficiencies of cellulosic bio-refineries, developing methods for the high-efficiency extraction of heavy oil, and investigating advanced electro- and thermo-chemical reactions.
Before joining Sandia in 2005, Ethan was a graduate research assistant at Colorado School of Mines where studied the fuel reforming that occurs in the anode of a solid oxide fuel cell. As participant in the Doctoral Studies Program at Sandia, Ethan earned a PhD from the University of Utah, where he researched oxy-combustion of coal. Google Scholar
