Biography

Since 2002, Lyle Pickett has been the Principal Investigator for the Spray Combustion project in the Engine Combustion Research Department of the Combustion Research Facility at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California. Lyle graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a PhD in mechanical engineering. He holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Brigham Young University.

As a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia, Lyle’s research expertise is in optical diagnostics of spray combustion in chambers that provide engine-relevant conditions at high pressure and temperature. He founded and leads an international experimental and modeling collaboration to share spray combustion datasets online through the Engine Combustion Network, encouraging the improvement of computational codes used to design and improve engines for increased efficiency and reduced emissions.

In addition to being named a Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International, Lyle has been honored with multiple awards from SAE, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Institute for Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems (ILASS), and DOE Vehicle Technologies.
