Biography

Pieterjan Robbe is a Senior Member of the Technical Staff and computational scientist at Sandia National Laboratories specializing in uncertainty quantification, surrogate modeling, and machine learning for scientific applications. His research focuses on developing methods that combine simulation, data, and uncertainty-aware decision making to accelerate scientific discovery. He is particularly interested in active learning and autonomous science, including hypothesis-driven approaches that use uncertainty quantification to identify the calculations or experiments that are most informative for scientific discovery. His work spans applications in chemical physics, materials science, energy, and multiscale modeling.

Education

Pieterjan received his MSc degree in Mathematical Engineering from KU Leuven (Belgium) in 2015. He earned a PhD in computer science also at KU Leuven in 2019. After a brief postdoc at KU Leuven, he joined the Combustion Research Facility at Sandia as a postdoc in 2021, and became a permanent staff member in the Computational Physical Sciences and Uncertainty Quantification department in 2023.
