Hydrogen

Sandia National Laboratories contributes to the science of advanced hydrogen and fuel cell (H2FC) technologies by providing a deep, quantitative understanding and scientific basis for materials and safety. Through its H2FC program, Sandia researches and develops methods to discover materials for hydrogen production, storage and use, evaluating their properties and performance with respect to targets established by DOE and the stakeholder community. Sandia provides the technical basis for assessing the safety of hydrogen fuel cell systems and infrastructure and accumulates knowledge used to inform relevant codes and standards. Research activities that include quantitative risk assessment, evaluating the hydrogen compatibility of materials, and characterizing the behavior of hydrogen at high pressure and cryogenic temperatures enable Sandia to offer science-based code improvements to domestic and international committees.

Sandia has expertise in synthesizing and characterizing ion-containing separators employed in fuel cells and electrolyzers, developing materials that demonstrate enhanced properties and durability. Sandia partners with industry to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell systems to address needs in transportation, stationary and portable power. In particular, Sandia works with the maritime industry to identify, design and evaluate ways in which hydrogen fuel cells can provide power to ports and on-board vessels such that energy consumption and emissions are reduced as compared with traditional fuels and technologies. Sandia also examines use of hydrogen fuel cell systems for rail, considering the aspects of design, cost, safety and application of codes and standards to both fueling stations and locomotives.
