The CRF awards, given every two years to recognize researchers that have made outstanding contributions in fundamental research, applied science, and technological support, were presented on July 8, 2026 at an all-hands meeting of Sandia’s Chemistry, Combustion, & Materials Science Center, which includes the CRF.
Named after Bill Adams, the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) original CRF sponsor, the O. W. Adams Award was established in 1986 and is given to Sandians who have made exemplary research contributions to fundamental science at the CRF. The 2026 award went to Krupa Ramasesha for pioneering ultrafast spectroscopic methods to reveal coupled electronic and nuclear dynamics, advancing Sandia’s basic research capabilities in nonequilibrium chemical physics, and for collaborative scientific leadership that strengthens the Combustion Research Facility.
Dedicated to the memory of Dr. Karl E. Bastress, who guided early combustion research activities for DOE, the Bastress Award recognizes Sandians whose exceptional contributions have led to a strong and effective coupling of CRF programs to the needs of U.S. industry. The 2026 award has been given to Dario Lopez Pintor for outstanding contributions to applied combustion research that translates fundamental science into transformative technologies, advancing affordable, efficient engines for the transportation and stationary power sectors, as well as fuel design tools for terrestrial and aviation applications.
The K. R. Hencken Award recognizes outstanding technical innovation and meticulous laboratory work in support of CRF research. The award is named for Ken Hencken, a longtime innovator of experimental design in the CRF, who made outstanding contributions to several different research programs during his career. The 2026 award is to Kendrew Au for exceptional technical innovation, experimental problem-solving, and collaborative contributions enabling high-impact scientific results.
